Welcome 2016!
I love starting a new year: out with the old, in with the new! So many possibilities, so many opportunities, so many resolutions come with the beginning of a new year. Cleaning up and finally getting organized in the house is one of my biggest. Also, if all goes well, we will remodel our kitchen in the spring. We will have to replace our fence as well, unfortunately, because the recent storms blew it over. And of course, exercising more and losing one is the constant one (together with redoing my site), but hopefully this year this will stick.
I had been finally officially diagnosed with arthritis and my rheumatologist recommended lots of low impact exercise, so we bought an elliptical machine, which is way harder to use that I have never expected…but I am building up to it! We placed it in the sun room, and will eventually take the place of the bar, once we will succeed in selling it. What a sad exchange.
The year started in the best way possible: with a three day weekend! January 1st was warm and sunny, so we dragged our ever complaining child to a pic-nic and walk in Mission Bay. What cruel parents! I think you should call Child Protective Service for abuse: making him walk on a beautiful bay on a sunny day!
selfie, without stick of course
I worn my Serotonin necklace, a Christmas present, as a symbol of good luck for the new year.
Well, the afternoon was all about Keegan. His friends Ezra and Quinn came over for a sleepover. They spent most of the time playing with the iPad, but I was too tired to argue, and instead enjoyed some relaxing time outside in the sun, which, contrary to my vampire of a son, I enjoy immensely. The evening was challenging, and the kids did not fall asleep till at least 12.30 am! Did they sleep in later the next morning??? Of course not: they were up and running by 5.30am.
After breakfast, we took all the boys to watch Star Wars VII in 3D, since his friends have not seen it yet, and honestly I did not mind it watching it again. It was still fun, plus I got to notice a lot of things I missed before.
Quick lunch at McDonald’s and then more playing. There was no fighting, for the most part, but by the time 3 pm rolled around I was exhausted. Matt and I went to nap as soon as the kids left…The peace and quiet felt nice.
School and work started again on January 4: on one hand it was hard to start again, but on the other it was nice to have some free hours again. With Matt working so much it has not really felt too much as a vacation, except for the awesome naps.
The following weekend, I received an early birthday present: for Ezra’s birthday, Keegan got invited for a whole day play date with sleepover, starting after 10am!!! Can you believe this? Of course Matt had to go to work, but I threaten divorce if he was not coming home early…just joking, but I did remind him how rare this is.
After dropping off Keegan, I took advantage of the beautiful weather and took a beautiful walk on Sunset Cliffs, just down the street from the kids’ house. So pretty!
By the time I got home, Matt arrived too, and our fun day began. We started with brunch at Kono’s in Pacific Beach, one of my favorite places and best breakfast place in San Diego. It is also the first place I visited in Pacific Beach in 1992.
big breakfast #2, my usual choice
After lunch we took a very long walk on the beach, even if the clouds were threatening rain (but it only drizzled). Back home we took a long, luxurious nap. Then we improvised…imagine that. We had appetizers and a huge ice cream, we went grocery shopping and watched a 3 hours movie starting at 9! We are really living la vida loca!
Since Keegan was not home, Fireball took over the job of waking us up early, but fortunately, after letting him out of the room, he left us alone and we slept in…The rest of the day was quiet. We picked up Keegan in the morning, and he had a whole 4 hours of sleep, so of course he crushed when we got home. We took care of getting ready for the week, and finally putting all the Christmas stuff away.
Talking of Fireball…he is growing up fast, which means more independent in some ways, but also more curious: keeping him home is almost impossible, since he tries to sneak out as soon as we turn our back. He also wants to be in the center of everything, from cooking to working.

The following Sunday was my birthday: while I never enjoy getting older, my boys (and my family and friends) really pampered me. I received many calls and messages of happy birthday, and I got to sleep in till 10am. When I woke up, the delicious smell of home cooked breakfast filled the kitchen. I got not 1, but 2 cakes: a cinnamon crumb coffee cake for breakfast, and a cheesecake for dinner.
bad picture, but awesome, heart filled card
There was a pile of presents, cards and flowers awaiting for me on the table.
I got everything I wanted and even a couple of surprises: Matt and Keegan got me a Lego Star Wars set that I had tried in-vane to convince Keegan to get. It is the final duel between Luke, Palpatine and Darth Vedar. So cool. So now I have my own, to build and I was even allowed by Keegan to keep some of the mini figures.
love this shirt
My family’s presents arrived a few days before the big day, for the most part. My sister got me a beautiful Kevin Kline nightgown, and my parents got me a bottle opener/necklace from Alessi, and the Lumio Book Lamp from the MoMA store.
Loredana sent me a beautiful brooch and an Alessi cat bowl for Fireball: spoiled kitty!
After breakfast I got to decide what to do, and I chose a hike on Torrey pines. Of course Keegan did not like it all, but too bad. And, after all, he only complained half of the time. I was even able to have a nice chat with Loredana while hiking, thanks to Watsup: miracles of technology!
The day was beautiful, not too warm not too cold, and as always the view was breathtaking. We were even able to see the spouts from the passing whales, moving South for the winter…how cool. Too bad we could not photograph it.
Back home, I relaxed on the deck while Matt vacuumed and prepped the fireplace (other presents for me). Keegan played with his toys, especially the new set of Kinex he got for his birthday. He builds pretty cool things.
As it got dark, we lit the fire, and enjoyed watching the flames. Keegan especially was excited about it.
When Keegan went to bed, Matt and I had dinner and ate cheesecake in front of the fire and just talked. Very nice.
What a great day! Thank you everyone!!!
